What the Royal Canadian Mint Does
Most Canadians know the Royal Canadian Mint makes coins. Fewer people know how much else about what the Mint does. The Mint has two facilities. One in Ottawa, where the craft work happens – collector coins, bullion in gold, silver, platinum and palladium, medals, and all the engraving and tooling that goes into creating coin dies. The refinery and assay lab are there too. Another in Winnipeg, where the volume happens. About one billion Canadian circulation coins come out of that facility every year. On top of circulation coins, the Mint produces investment-grade bullion – Gold and Silver Maple Leafs, platinum and palladium coins, bars in gold and silver – all at 99.99% purity for gold. That standard has been the benchmark since 1982.
The Mint is a Crown corporation, owned by the Government of Canada. That means the bullion it produces is government-guaranteed. When you’re buying or selling precious metals, that kind of backing matters.
